Is it Time to Invest in a Pallet Wrapper?

Pallet wrappers are pallet wrapping machines which make the process of wrapping pallets easy compared to manually wrapping pallets by hand. Not only will it save you time and effort, but pallet wrappers will also help to save you money over the long term and reduce wastage of your stretch film. So if you’re looking to improve the efficiency of your packaging operation, investing in a pallet wrapper is a great place to start.

When Should You Invest in Pallet Wrapping Machines?

One of the biggest questions businesses have is when to invest in a pallet wrapper. In other words, when does it make more sense to transition from wrapping pallets by hand, to wrapping pallets with a machine?

As we know, pallet wrapping machines can wrap a pallet in a fraction of the time it takes to do the same job by hand. But if you’re only wrapping one or two pallets per day, investing in a pallet wrapping machine might not be your main priority.

Instead, you should be looking to invest in a pallet wrapper when manual pallet wrapping is taking up too much time of your warehouse team. The last thing you want is to be struggling to get pallets wrapped and dispatched simply because you haven’t got the right equipment. And this will have the added bonus of freeing up your warehouse team for other jobs.

Equally, if you’re looking at ways to economise your operation, a pallet wrapper is a great investment at any time. With a pallet wrapper, you will minimise wastage of machine film. That’s because machine applied film applies an increase of 200–300% stretch for improved economy. Put simply, the greater the stretch, the less film you will use.

Benefits of Pallet Wrapping Machines

While we’ve already touched on some, but let’s take a closer look at the benefits of pallet wrappers.

  1. Time efficiencies – a pallet wrapping machine greatly reduces the time it takes to wrap a pallet
  2. Efficient wrapping – every pallet you wrap will get a consistent result, meaning improved security through transit
  3. Reduced cost – pallet wrappers will stretch your machine film to get the most out of every roll. Not only that, but the consistent wrapping results will also minimise film wastage
  4. Improved protection – the consistent wrap you will achieve from using a pallet wrapper will protect your goods well from moisture, dirt and dust
  5. Better health & safety – manually wrapping pallets can be a hazardous task. By automating the process, you’re keeping your staff safer
  6. Increased productivity – by reducing the time it takes to wrap a pallet, you can get many more pallets wrapped per day while also freeing up time for other jobs

What Type of Pallet Wrapper Do You Need?

The most common and widely used pallet wrapping machine is an automatic turntable machine. This type of pallet wrapper will be suitable for most operations. With a turntable pallet wrapper, you could increase your output to 30 or more pallets wrapped per hour.

There are also more advanced options available, such as a rotating arm or a ring wrapper. These machines could help you increase your output to 100 or more pallets per hour. However, you may also need to install protective cages due to the speed at which the machines work.

Your budget will also come into play here too. A high quality Robopac turntable pallet wrapper could cost you as little as £3,000—£10,000. On the other hand, a rotary arm or ring wrapper machine could cost you tens of thousands of pounds or more. How to Use a Pallet Wrapping Machine?

Using pallet wrappers is not too complex. They have been designed to be easy to use and speed up the process of wrapping pallets. Robopac machines have a user-friendly display screen where you can control speeds and even the tension of the machine shrink film.

Once set up, you can follow these steps to use a pallet wrapping machine:

  1. Load your pallet onto the turntable
  2. Feed the machine film through the carriage and tie around the corner of your pallet
  3. Confirm the settings on the machine’s display and press go to begin wrapping the pallet
  4. Let the machine do all the hard work and stand well clear of the turntable while the wrapping is in process
  5. When the wrapping machine has finished, cut off the machine film and dismount the pallet

Depending on which model you have, the steps will be slightly different, and you can amend the settings to your preference. To see some pallet wrappers in action, watch our Robopac videos.
