Improving your operational efficiency is the quickest way to get your orders out the door – but how?

Automation:

Automatic Logistics Delivery Isometric Background

Automating some, or all of your packing line is one of the best ways to save on labour and material costs. Automation may seem overwhelming, but Springpack will help you incorporate it in various ways. They will support you throughout the process.

Machinery like automatic tape dispensers and packing machines, when integrated with your current packing line, can enhance efficiency and reduce costs.

Reduce packing time:

Reducing your packing time means that your packers can process more orders. Minor modifications like using extended rolls of tape can decrease your workers’ idle time, as they won’t need to replace the rolls as often.

Changing your packing process can speed things up, too. If you currently use shipping boxes that require assembly, consider switching to crash-lock base postal boxes. Boxes with crash lock bases do not require adhesive to assemble, saving you time.

Standardised packaging sizes:

Whilst using oversized boxes can be wasteful, having lots of shapes and sizes of boxes is too. This is because boxes take up lots of valuable space in your warehouse. Reducing the different-sized boxes is a great place to start to optimise your space. Here at Springpack, we can hold up to three months of your bespoke boxes and deliver it the next working day, allowing you to keep your stocks concise.

Uniformity for palletisation:

Using standardised box sizes also assists in the uniformity of pallet stacking. Boxes that fit together nicely when stacked onto a pallet mean that less time-consuming “Carton Tetris” needs to take place. This also means that products are more likely to arrive safe and secure at their destination.

Pallets are wrapped quicker with uniform boxes, as less revolutions of wrap will be required for load stability.

Alternative packaging solutions:

As mentioned above, switching your packaging products can reduce your packing time, and save on material costs.

Consider if your package could be sent using a postage bag, postal tube or padded mailing bag instead of a double wall cardboard box. Switching packaging materials can be incredibly cost effective and a reduction in materials is a great way to become more environmentally friendly.

Optimise packing space:

Optimizing the valuable space around your packing area is crucial for maximizing efficiency and productivity. By making small changes such as adding an overhead hopper for void fill materials or implementing pick bins for frequently ordered products, you can significantly improve the workflow and organization of your packing process.

An overhead hopper for void fill materials allows you to store and access packing materials such as air pillows or bubble wrap easily, without taking up valuable floor space. This not only streamlines the packing process but also helps to keep the packing area neat and organized.

Similarly, implementing pick bins for hot products can help to reduce the time spent searching for and retrieving items during the packing process. By having these products easily accessible and organized in designated bins, packers can quickly locate and pack them, leading to faster order fulfilment and increased productivity.
