Extended producer responsibility for packaging: who is affected and what to do

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging is a regulatory framework introduced by the UK government to ensure that businesses contributing to packaging waste are accountable for its lifecycle, from production to disposal.

This initiative aims to promote sustainable packaging practices and reduce environmental impact.

Who is Affected by EPR?

Businesses operating in the UK must assess their obligations under EPR. You are required to take action if:

    • Annual Turnover: Your organisation has an annual turnover exceeding £1 million, based on the most recent annual accounts up to 7 April.

    • Packaging Volume: You were responsible for importing or supplying more than 25 tonnes of packaging to the UK market in the previous calendar year.

    • Packaging Activities: Your business engages in activities such as supplying packaged goods under your own brand, placing goods into packaging, importing products in packaging, owning an online marketplace, hiring or loaning out reusable packaging, or supplying empty packaging.

For detailed information on packaging activities and definitions, refer to the UK government’s guidance on EPR
