Essentials For Your Packaging Process
Essentials For Your Packaging Process
We know how important it is for your packaging process to run as smoothly as possible. So here is our quick guide to some of the top essentials you’ll need to keep productivity rolling!
Boxes
Boxes are, after all, the backbone of most packaging processes. It’s important that you select good quality boxes and cartons that are up to the task of protecting the products you are packing. You must also decide whether you will opt for single wall boxes or double wall boxes, or indeed a mixture of the two. The difference between them is in the layers of fluting which help with the formation and shape of the box.
Double wall boxes have two layers of fluting, making them more suitable for fragile or heavy items. Put simply, they are able to withstand more damage. They are also better for stacking where this is required. Single wall boxes are the better choice for smaller, lighter items that don’t require the same level of protection. Given there is less cardboard, they are cheaper to buy, and send too. Some items may require specific box designs such as book boxes and postal boxes. It’s always better to ensure you’re stocked up in boxes of all sizes to avoid downtime.
Protective packaging
Despite selecting top quality boxes and cartons, protective packaging is still an absolute must. Without this extra level of protection goods are at risk of damage in transit. This in turn can lead to costly returns, and re-shipments down the line.
It’s also particularly important when you’re required to pack fragile or awkwardly shaped items, as protective packaging can fill voids in boxes and allow you to secure the product in place. There are a number of different options available including foam and bubble wrap, as well as edge guards and corners. For more information about the best option for your process, check out our blog on foam vs. bubble wrap.
Labels
Labels can literally make or break a parcel. They have a wide variety of purposes, from warning about the contents to indicating when certain checks have taken place. Parcel labels can be used to instruct the receiver on how to treat the parcel, for example ‘Handle with care’, ‘Do not bend’ or ‘Do not crush’. These instructions could mean the difference between a product arriving in perfect condition or in pieces. Marking fragile parcels with a ‘FRAGILE’ label may seem like a small detail but could actually save you a lot of money.
Another example is quality control labels. Their use indicates the stage of the QC process the package is at. They and are usually colour coded for quick identification too. Without using these labels, time could be wasted needlessly re-checking parcels.
Packing knives
Keeping a good number of quality packing knives on hand really is essential to keeping your process running smoothly. There are many varieties designed for different applications, but all are designed to make the life of workers easier when cutting packaging materials. If there aren’t enough packing knives to hand, people may resort to using scissors or attempting to open parcels by hand. Both of which can be dangerous.
They have various safety features to ensure safe use, for example this pocket safety cutter features a blunted safety tip. Or, if you opt for an auto loading knife, you can benefit from an ergonomic handle with rubber grip and a chamber that stores 5 new blades. For an option that both right handed and left handed workers can use, why not select an ambidextrous safety cutter with the added bonus of a safety blade/guard activation system.
Tapes
Plenty of time is spent taping up packages and making sure they’re secure for delivery. With an overwhelming variety of types available, you can ensure you have the best tape for each application. From strapping tape to low tack protection tape or warning tape, tape is a very important part of the packaging process.
Applying tape by hand can be time-consuming and inefficient, however with an effective tape dispenser you can improve productivity and also the comfort of the user. You can also ensure a smooth application every time.
